​From Shuru to the Nation: Sumit Thakur’s Inspiring Journey to the National Youth Award​

In a heartening development for Himachal Pradesh, Sumit Thakur from Shuru village in Manali, Kullu district, has been honored with the prestigious National Youth Award 2021–22 by the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. This accolade, presented at the National Youth Parliament 2025 in the new Parliament building in Delhi, recognizes his exceptional contributions to social service and nation-building.

A Beacon of Social Commitment

Sumit’s dedication to community service began at the age of 15. Driven by a deep sense of responsibility, he has organized numerous blood donation camps and personally donated blood 21 times. His commitment extends to organ donation awareness, having pledged to donate all his organs after death, inspiring many others to follow suit. ​

Leadership in Crisis

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Sumit launched “Mission Digital CoroAware,” a 200-day-long awareness campaign. He distributed essential supplies like medicines, masks, and ration to the needy, ensuring doorstep deliveries during lockdowns. His tireless efforts earned him widespread appreciation and recognition.

Environmental Stewardship

A strong advocate for environmental conservation, Sumit has led multiple tree plantation drives and awareness rallies. He introduced the innovative idea of gifting plants on birthdays, encouraging people to nurture them for three years, thereby contributing to environmental protection.

Empowering Youth Through ‘Yuva’

To further his mission, Sumit co-founded “Yuva: Youth for Voluntary Action,” an NGO dedicated to mobilizing young minds for social causes, including blood donation, environmental conservation, organ donation, and relief efforts for underprivileged communities. Under his leadership, Yuva has organized over 2,000 youths across the state.

Recognition and Inspiration

Sumit’s relentless public service has been recognized at the highest levels. In 2020, he was honored with the President’s Award by then-President Ram Nath Kovind for his dedication to youth empowerment and public service. His selection for the National Youth Award has sparked celebrations across Himachal Pradesh, with leaders like former CM Jai Ram Thakur, MP Kangana Ranaut, Dr. Rajeev Bhardwaj, and Govind Thakur extending their congratulations.
